Understanding Home Use Rights for Photography Clients
When you receive your digital images, you will also receive a very important benefit: Home Use Rights. Therefore, understanding what that means helps you enjoy your photographs while also protecting your photographer’s artistic work and legal rights.
This guide explains how to print, share, and store your images, and which uses are prohibited under U.S. copyright rules (United States Copyright Law 17 U.S.C.).

What Are “Home Use Rights”?
Your contract includes Home Use Rights, which grants you a personal, non-transferable, non-commercial license to use your photographs.
Additionally, this means Debra Heschl Photography retains full copyright ownership of all images.
You may use your photos for personal and family purposes only, not for business, resale, or commercial purposes.
These rights serve two purposes:
- Allows you to print and back up your images
- Protect the artistic integrity and quality of the photographs
What You Are Allowed to Do
Under your photography print release and home use license, you may:
1. Make Personal Prints
You may print as many copies as you like for:
- Yourself
- Family members
- Gifts
2. Create Backups
You may copy your disc or digital download for archival storage in a separate location.
Please note: Do not give image files or discs to anyone outside your immediate family.
3. Share Online (With Credit)
You may upload images to:
- Personal blogs
- Personal websites
Requirements:
- Use watermarked web images or
- Include the credit line:
“Copyright Debra Heschl Photography”
4. Crop to Standard Print Sizes
Cropping for artistic effects is not permitted.
Images may be cropped only to standard sizes, such as:
- 4×6
- 5×7
- 8×10
What You May Not Do
To protect copyright and image quality, the following uses are not allowed:
- Sell image files or prints
- Use images for any commercial purpose
- Provide images to vendors, companies, or other photographers
- Use images as the basis for artwork for commercial use
- Convert images to black & white
- Alter color, contrast, or retouch images
- Add or remove elements
- Distort or apply filters
- Release images to anyone outside the immediate family
Any additional editing or retouching is at the photographer’s discretion. Clients interested in requesting edits should contact Debra Heschl Photography to discuss their needs.
Please note that additional fees may apply depending on the nature and extent of the requested edits. Additionally, you are responsible for informing anyone who receives copies of these usage limitations.
Image Editing, Filters & AI Policy
Thinking of tweaks? Let’s chat first. Do not edit images using filters, AI tools, retouching apps, or any photo-altering software.
These changes alter the photographer’s original work and may misrepresent the quality and style of the images. You must request and receive approval from Debra Heschl Photography for any additional retouching.
To protect the artistic integrity of your photographs, do not alter images using editing apps, filters, AI tools, or retouching software.
This includes (but is not limited to):
- Social media filters
- Presets
- Skin-smoothing or face-altering apps
- Background removal tools
- AI enhancement or modification tools
- Color or lighting adjustments
These changes alter the photographer’s original work and may misrepresent the quality and style of the images.
Furthermore, you must request and obtain approval from Debra Heschl Photography for any additional retouching.
Digital File Storage Responsibility
While clients are responsible for downloading, storing, and backing up their digital image files after delivery, consider this process your simplest form of insurance against potential data loss.
Securing your cherished photographs in multiple locations, such as an external hard drive and cloud storage, ensures they remain a lasting treasure.
Debra Heschl Photography is not responsible for lost, damaged, or deleted files after delivery to the client. However, files may be requested within 1 year of the original delivery date.

Web Images vs. Print Images
Your files are provided in separate folders for different uses.
Social Share (Web Resolution)
Use these images for:
- Social media
- Blogs
- Websites
- Email sharing
These files are not for printing.
Print Folder (Print Resolution)
Use these images for:
- Framed prints
- Photo albums
- Photo books
- Greeting cards
- Scrapbooks
These files are suitable for prints up to 8×10. To print larger sizes or to obtain high-resolution files, please contact Debra Heschl Photography.
They will provide guidance on the process and any additional fees that may apply for larger print requests.
Screenshot & Social Media Image Policy
Screenshots from social media are not suitable for printing and are considered altered, low-resolution files. Printing screenshots will result in poor image quality, including blurriness, pixelation, and incorrect color.
Please use only the provided print-resolution images from your Print folder for any printed products. Debra Heschl Photography is not responsible for print quality from screenshots or web-sized files.
Watermark Protection
Watermarks or logos on web-sized images may not be removed, cropped out, or altered in any way. Watermarks help protect copyright and ensure proper credit for the artwork.
Social Media Tagging
When you share your images online, tagging @DebraHeschlPhotography is always appreciated but never required.
Professional Printing Matters
For best results, consider using professional photolabs. Many one-hour labs and discount stores apply automatic color and contrast adjustments, which can drastically change how your image looks.
For example, skin tones can turn orange under discount lighting corrections, and other colors may appear washed out or overly saturated.
Recommended labs include:

When ordering, be sure to turn OFF color correction.
Debra Heschl Photography is responsible for the quality of the image file, not for prints produced at external labs.
Image Quality Notice
Cropping or enlarging an image beyond its intended size may reduce print quality. Low-resolution files are never suitable for printing.
Heirloom & Archival Quality
Professional photo labs use archival papers and processes designed to preserve your photographs for generations without fading, color shifts, or deterioration. Professional printing protects both the beauty and longevity of your images.
Digital File Storage Responsibility
Clients are responsible for downloading, storing, and backing up their digital files after delivery. Debra Heschl Photography is not responsible for lost or damaged files once delivered.
File Availability
The photographer does not guarantee indefinite storage of files. Please download and back up your images promptly after delivery.
Photography Copyright Reminder
Even with a print release, copyright ownership remains with the photographer. Photographers retain copyright to protect their work, allowing them to control the distribution and use of their images. Home Use Rights are a license, not a transfer of ownership.
